Im April 2003 wurde im Rahmen einer Ostsee- Expedition nach dem Wrack der Goya gesucht und die Untergangsstelle des deutschen Frachters gefunden.  Die Goya war bei Kriegsende für die Evakuierung der deutschen Ostprovinzen eingesetzt. Nachdem das Schiff bei vier Fahrten bereits 19.785 Personen evakuiert hatte, wurde es auf seiner fünften Fahrt am 16. April 1945 durch das sowjetische U-Boot L-3 versenkt. Dabei kamen über 7.000 Menschen ums Leben. Der Untergang der Goya gilt als eine der größten Katastrophen der Seefahrt. 

Begleitet wurde die Expedition durch ein deutsches TV-Team das einen Filmbeitrag über die Goya drehte. In einer spannenden Dokumentation wird minutiös rekonstruiert, wie es 1945 zur  Tragödie kam. Der Film zeigt seltene historische Dokumente und lässt Zeitzeugen zu Wort kommen, die das Unglück überlebten. Darunter ist auch der Funker der Goya, Fred Büttner, und der Mechaniker des Beibootes der Goya, Johannes Rühmling.  

During a diving expedition in the Baltic Sea we searched and found the wreck of the Goya. During the last days of WWII, the Goya was on service for the evacuation of the German Eastprovinces. After the ship had successfully completed four voyages and had evacuated 19.785 people, she was sunk during her 5th voyage on April 16, 1945, by Sovjet submarine L-3, with the loss of over 7000 people. The sinking of the Goya was one of the greatest disasters in martime history.

Along with the expedition team was a German TV-Team, which was producing a film about the Goya. In a stirring documentary with minute care reconstruction the documentary shows how the tragedy took place in 1945. The film further shows historical documents and features interviews with con- temporary witnesses, who had survived the disaster. Among others, the radio operator of the Goya, Fred Büttner and the mechanic of the tender ship of the Goya, Johannes Rühmling are heard.
