Seit ihrer Kreation 1953 gilt die Fifty Fathoms von Blancpain als Archetyp der modernen Taucheruhren. 60 Jahre später setzen zwei neue Modelle die legendäre, längst zur Ikone gewordene Linie fort. Inspiriert von dem Tauchboot, das die Schweizer Ozeanografen Auguste und Jacques Piccard für die Tiefseeforschung entwickelt hatten, brachte Blancpain in den späten 1950er Jahren die Taucheruhren Bathyscaphe in Modellen für Damen und Herren auf den Markt. Die heutige Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe wurde für das 60. Jubiläum der Uhr auf der Baselword 2013 vorgestellt.

Die Erfolgsstory der ikonischen Fifty Fathoms von Blancpain, der ersten modernen Taucheruhr, und die Geschichte des Tauchens selbst sind seit 1953 miteinander verflochten. Es war deshalb nur angemessen, dass Blancpain diese beiden Geschichtsstränge in einem Maßstäbe setzenden und reich illustrierten Werk mit dem Titel Fifty Fathoms – The Dive and Watch History 1953-2013 vereinigte. Die Herausgeber von Blancpain engagierten Spezialisten beider Bereiche, um die jeweiligen Entwicklungen und Meilensteine der Unterwasser-Zeitmessung und der Erforschung der Meereswelt zu erzählen. Das Ergebnis ist ein umfassendes Porträt von Pionieren und Erfindern, die noch nie in einem Bildband zusammentrafen. Mit seiner einmaligen Materialsammlung bildet er ein maßgebliches historisches Nachschlagewerk für Taucher ebenso wie für Aficionados von Taucheruhren.
Dieses neue Werk listet erstmals auf umfassende Weise die Meilensteine in der nunmehr über sechzigjährigen Geschichte der Fifty-Fathoms-Taucheruhr von Blancpain auf. So wie die Fifty Fathoms sich weiterentwickelte und verbesserte, machten auch die Welt des Tauchens und ihre Techniken Fortschritte. Das Herausgeberteam von Blancpain für den Band Fifty Fathoms – The Dive and Watch History 1953-2013 stützte sich auf die Erfahrung von Dietmar W. Fuchs, Verfasser, Fotograf und Verleger internationaler Tauchsportpublikationen, sowie der beiden bekannten Uhrenjournalisten Jeffrey S. Kingston und Stephan Ciejka. Ihre Kapitel schildern die Schicksale von 24 der berühmtesten Abenteurer, die als Pioniere die Erforschung der Meereswelt begründeten, darunter Hans Haas, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Stan Waterman, Bret Gilliam und Mario Weidner. Diese erstmals zusammengetragene Quelle für die Geschichte der Taucheruhren und des Tauchens enthält auch eine Zeitleiste der beiden Themenkreise sowie ein umfassendes Glossar ihrer Fachausdrücke.

Created in 1953, the Fifty Fathoms by Blancpain is the archetype of diving watches. The history of this iconic collection from the first Fifty Fathoms vintage watches to the last Blancpain Bathyscaphe unveiled at Baselworld 2013 for the 60th anniversary.

The histories of Blancpain’s iconic Fifty Fathoms, the world’s first modern diving watch, and diving itself have been intertwined ever since 1953. It is, thus, fitting that Blancpain has brought these two stories together in a richly illustrated collectible volume entitled “Fifty Fathoms The Dive and Watch History 1953-2013”. Blancpain’s editors enlisted experts from both fields to chronicle the twin evolutions and milestones of underwater time keeping and exploration. The result is a comprehensive portrait of pioneers and inventors never before assembled in a single album. This volume with its unique compilation of materials has been conceived to become an authoritative historical resource for both divers and diving watch aficionados.
This new volume for the first time comprehensively charts the milestones in the 60 year history of Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms. From its birth in 1953, the Fifty Fathoms provided a formula so well conceived that it defined the entire genre ever since. Innovation did not stop with the first watch and Blancpain has honored and enriched the legacy with numerous inventions and improvements that have continued to secure the pre-eminent position of the Fifty Fathoms in the world of diving watches.
As the Fifty Fathoms evolved and matured so did the world of diving. The editorial team which created Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms The Dive and Watch History 1953-2013 drew upon the expertise of Dietmar W. Fuchs, editor of international dive publications, and Jeffrey S. Kingston and Stephan Ciejka, noted watch journalists. Its chapters recount the stories of 24 of the most important adventurers who pioneered exploration of the world’s oceans such as Hans Haas, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Stan Waterman, Bret Gilliam and Mario Weidner. This never before assembled resource of horology and diving also includes a time line charting these two histories as well as an encyclopedia of terms.
Blancpain has brought these sagas together in the context of its dedication to the cause of the preservation and protection of the world’s oceans, which is called the Blancpain Ocean Commitment.
